In my last article I mentioned that we would be looking at God’s Calendar vs. Man’s Calendar. Brethren, now it is time to look at what the scriptures say. My opinion doesn’t count. I would rather the scriptures talk for themselves. The Berean’s studied the word and did not take what man says about the scriptures. Yes we need to be like the Berean’s and study to show yourself approved unto God, rightly dividing the word of truth. How can we do this? We need to spend time with God and listen intently to the Spirit; this can only be achieved with a closer walk with God.
What will you get from this Article? A commentary along with the scripture in focus. There is no chronological order, it is taken from my research.
Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handy work”.
Genesis 1:14
And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years”.
In the Strong’s concordance, we see that Signs are a distinguishing mark, banner, remembrance, miraculous sign, warning, token, ensign, standard miracle and proof. Now Seasons in Hebrew are called a Moadim or an appointed time, sacred season, set feast, appointed season, please see also Leviticus 23:2 stipulating these are the Lord’s feasts (my feasts). Finally Days in the Hebrew is Yom a day as opposed to night, 24 hour period as defined by evening and morning as in Genesis 1.
What is Rosh Chodesh?
Rosh Chodesh or Rosh Hodesh Beginning of the Month; lit. Head of the Month) is the name for the first day of every month in the Hebrew calendar, marked by the appearance of the new moon. Contrasted with the astronomical definition of new moon which is not visible to the naked eye – the new moon in the Hebrew calendar marked by the day and hour that the new crescent is observed. It is considered a minor holiday, akin to the intermediate days of Passover and Sukkot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosh_Chodesh
In my research what I found interesting is this scripture from Isaiah, from new moon to new moon and Sabbath to Sabbath all flesh will worship before me, says the lord. This is distinct in separating the new moon from the Sabbath. As we just mentioned above, the new moon is the first day of every month, but the Sabbath is the seventh day (see Gen 2:3). The fact is the seventh day is hallowed and set apart.
Now moving on, Matthew 5:17-19 says
“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven”.
Psalm 104:19
“The lord appointed the moon for the seasons and the sun knows its setting”.
God appointed is meant God has given the moon charge over the seasons. We only need to look at our agricultural seasons to see this, we have spring, summer, fall and winter, annually. So there is time for planting and harvest, again all seasonal. In the Hebrew Calendar in the seventh month (Nisan) the barley had to be ripe or Aviv. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviv
Amos 8:5
“Saying, when will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit”?
Here we have a clear distinction that this group of crooked business people are not interested in keeping these two holy convocations and are purely interested in their evil business motives. It is implying a double Sabbath as these are back to back. Firstly we have a new moon month followed by the Sabbath.
I found this out to be back on the 11th and 12th of May 2013. It was Friday evening of the 10th Rosh Chodesh until Saturday sunset, and from Saturday sunset to Sunday sunset, Sabbath. The moon was fully dark waning and not until sunset Sunday could we see the first sliver of the new moon waxing. I may have the waxing waning incorrect, but usually in the middle of the month around the fixed 15th Shabbat the moon is always fully illuminated, representing the fullness of the glorification of Jesus Christ, Yeshua the Son of God. Again what I found fascinating is the middle of the month can be significant to the Cross, dead in the middle, the illumination of the Son of God.
2 Kings 4:23
And he said, “Wherefore will you go to him today? [it is] neither new moon, nor Sabbath. And she said, [It shall be] well”.
We have a situation whereby this Shunammite woman is begging her Husband to visit the Prophet Elisha as her son is dead, he replies with the above verse and in respect she says it will be alright. To cut a long story short, the boys is brought back to life from a miracle of the Lord, through the Prophet Elisha. The main emphasis is the distinction between the new moon and Sabbath.
Will the real calendar please stand up!
An ancient Hebrew Calendar can be traced right back to the 15th century BC with Moses. Now Moses was given the luni-solar calendar from Yahweh that would calculate the yearly holy day seasons by both the new moons (lunar year) and the harvest seasons (solar year). Abib is the first month of the holy day year when the barley was ripe (see Duet 16).
Readers without going into this article to deep, you will find this is just a taster into this most controversial topic. So don’t be afraid to investigate into it more. There are a lot of conflicting views, but it is all food for thought. In conclusion the scriptures tell us to study to show oneself approved unto God, a workman never to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2Tim 2:15).
