About Me
My name is Craig McCartan and I am a Father of twin boys aged 12, and I have created this website to tell the world that us Father’s can make a difference in our Children’s life.
Born in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1962, both my parents were newly married and migrated to New Zealand and took up roles as elders in the Church of Latter Day Saints (I guess it was their calling) . My Dad was a Bernardo boy (originally from Great Britain) and my Mum from (Lakemba, Sydney, Australia), eventually my Dad left the Church, and joined the NZ Army and was away for a few years in both NZ and Australia. When I was born, Mum had to go away for a while, she was suffering from Post Natal Depression. My Mother struggled bringing us up whilst Dad was away, and she wasn’t coping to well, what with being in a new country, newly married an being young, I guess it was a burden on her. Meanwhile Dad was playing military games Overseas.
Fast Forward some 46 years later. I was a working Professional until I had a breakdown in August of 2009, I could no longer work or perform in my capacity.
I resigned from the Company and took my severance pay and decided to return to Australia to sort myself out. This was a tough decision as this meant leaving my boys behind in London with their Mother.
You see, Elaine (my ex) and I, had been already divorced 3 years before, and by then I had moved around quite a bit since 2006. In 2006, I spent the next 12 months in rehabilitation for alcohol and drug abuse, my Company paid for my treatment, I guess I was lucky to have such a good Company value me.
Anyway I arrived in Sydney around October of 2009 and stayed with my brother for a few days before heading off to Nambucca Heads NSW. My mother resides in Nambucca and it was there that I decided to base myself. My Mother was aware that I had issues from over the years and it was her that suggested I see her Doctor to get a proper diagnosis of my mental health, as I had been severely depressed for years and the medication wasn’t really effective.
It was after several consultations that I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder from my Doctor. I returned to the UK in March of 2010 and since then I have had a re-diagnosis and was confirmed with the disorder.
Today I live with my condition by taking my medication, also I have my children on weekends and enjoy doing things with them.
It’s not always easy as the bouts of mania and depression are still there to some degree, but at least I’m aware of it and if it gets to bad, I try to let people no.
Anyway I’m still not sure how this site will go and I’m experimenting all the time, but I hope eventually this site will help other Father’s like me and to no they are not alone.
